Teaching Students How to Learn
Expert teaching. Thoughtful support. Growing independence.
Harry
THINK → BUILD → PERFORM
HERMES ACADEMY:
有学生从 Year 4 跟随 Harry 学到 Year 10,也有学生从 Year 8 学到 Year 12,随后进入大学。
Teaching Students How to Learn
Harry Zhang: “I hope that one day my students will no longer need me.”
A simple bowl of instant noodles can become the beginning of a chemistry lesson. In his Subiaco classroom, Harry has used everyday questions about cooking to help students connect abstract concepts with familiar experiences, then ask why something happens and what might change under different conditions.
He has also connected vocabulary learning with a student’s interest in games, and used a Year 8 song-analysis assignment to explore language, literature, musical style and artistic expression. Interest opens the conversation; the longer-term question is whether students can think for themselves and use what they have learnt in a new situation.
Understand the child before choosing the support
“Why do you think that?” is a question Harry often asks. A wrong answer may reflect difficulty reading the question, uncertain concepts or uncertainty about strategy. A correct answer does not necessarily demonstrate deep understanding. Listening to the full reasoning helps identify the next useful step.
Writing samples, short tasks and classroom discussion help Harry develop an initial understanding of each learner, which he continues to test and adjust. In English, he guides students back to evidence in the text. In mathematics, he asks them to explain relationships and reasoning. In science, observations, demonstrations and everyday phenomena provide starting points for questions.
From understanding to independent application
Harry’s seven years of teaching experience span primary GATE preparation through senior ATAR study. His teaching experience includes English, mathematics, physics, chemistry, humanities, economics and accounting. Students he has taught have achieved a first-place result in the WA GATE writing component; one progressed from a Year 4 school C grade to a GATE score of 276 and admission to Perth Modern School. These are individual experiences, not guaranteed outcomes.
In writing, similar difficulties may have different causes. A student may misunderstand the task, struggle to organise ideas, or have an outline but lack the detail or evidence to develop it. Harry targets the specific difficulty rather than treating all incomplete writing alike.
THINK: understand the task, identify its requirements and develop ideas. BUILD: select content, organise structure and connect details or evidence. PERFORM: write independently, then check, revise and improve. Improving one piece matters; learning how to approach the next piece is the longer-term goal.
A shared direction across the team
HERMES teachers work across year levels and subjects, with a shared focus on reading, writing, logical thinking, independent learning and communication. They ask what a student can already do, where they are stuck, what to practise next and whether they can complete a different task independently.
The academy’s approach follows five steps: understand the starting point, set goals, provide targeted practice, give feedback and adjust, then review and apply. Observations and records support teaching continuity and help families understand specific changes in a student’s learning.
Growing independence from PP to Year 12
Early language, reading, number sense and routines develop into deeper comprehension, structured writing and mathematical reasoning. Secondary students increasingly need subject understanding, time management and independent revision. Support begins with current needs while building skills for the next stage.
When families consider senior subjects, Harry helps them discuss the student’s foundations, interests, strengths, workload and future direction. Choices must also consider school requirements and the university prerequisites and entry requirements published at the relevant time. Learning to make considered decisions is itself part of growing independence.
Thinking in an age of AI
When answers are easy to obtain, students still need to understand, judge and apply them. Can they explain a solution? Assess whether evidence supports a claim? Check information and form their own view? Explaining ideas and reasoning helps students test their own understanding.
From an everyday chemistry question to an independently planned essay, the aim is consistent: encourage curiosity, develop ways to think and help students use tools while retaining their own judgement.
“I hope that one day my students will no longer need me.”
Spark interest. Identify difficulties. Develop strategies. Apply learning independently. These practical steps connect Harry’s classroom with HERMES ACADEMY’s shared commitment to helping children learn how to learn.
